Why is Turkey such a poor country ?

Instabul, Izmir, and the Aegean coasts have higher standards of livings due to urbanism and tourism, that in Central/Eastern Turkey which is predominantly rural, traditional and corrupt.

Turkey is rich in terms of natural resources. Turkey is richer (in economic terms) than any of its immediate neighbours, including those in the EU.

In quality of life Turkey is head and shoulders above western European countries and the USA.

I'd rather be poor (in financial terms) in Turkey than in any of the so called "developed" countries.
