Why is USA so good at swimming and basketball but we're pretty good at the other sports? I mean Michael has just dominated the pool and the girl gymnastics took 1st and 2nd. But really those are the 2 main sports we hear about with US.

  1. We have wonderful athletes here. Our swimming team is just dominating everything, the womens side not near as much but we are still taking medals. And as for basketball we are home to the NBA. Until another franchise comes out that can compete with the NBA then we will continue to dominate it. The players will go where the money is. And right now its in the United States. I am hoping that we can knock off China in gold medals once we get through with all the volleyballs basketballs track and field, other areas where we are superior to the chinese in previous years.

  2. Why is Germany so good at equestrian? Why is China so good at diving? Why is Italy so good at fencing? Why is Indonesia so good at badmindon? Why is Korea so good at archery? Why is Japan so good at judo? Why is Russia so good at wrestling? There is no official reasons to these kind of questions, some country just happen to be years ahead of others in some particular events. It pains me every time a Dutch kickboxer go into the ring, because I know his oppoent is going to suffer.

  3. I don't know about the other sports, but there has been an extreme interest in Michael Phelps, the US swimming god. He has ADD and thinks about nothing but swimming. NBC has reported that all he does every day is eat, swim, and sleep. When he eats, he eats about 12,000 calories of food; and when he swims, he swims for over 6 hours.

  4. i agree with friz :)

  5. Because we have great coaches here for swimming and gymnastics, and the players compete against eachother all year long. It makes them stronger. I'm not that into basketball I thought the best training was overseas for basketball.

  6. B/c USA just freakin ROCKS :)

  7. Maybe it's because we have very extensive swimming programs all throughout the country and all of the top Colleges have programs that are often praised (in fact many other Olympians from other countries have been known to train in the US. Which isn't to say that other countries aren't great, because obviously they are, I just feel that each country concentrates their attention on certain sports. As for basketball, take a look at the NBA...we have many great American players but it is also an international game now and we haven't dominated in a long time, hence the name "The Redeem Team."

Oh, our soccer team (womens), volleyball teams (May-Treanor and Walsh are officially incredible) and our track and field competitors are no slouches either.
