Question:

Why is VegNews magazine SO negative toward vegetarians?

I'm a vegetarian. I have been working toward a complete vegan diet. As a result, I picked up VegNews magazine, hoping for some good info and some good recipes. It seemed to have an awful lot of comments, not encouraging vegetarianism, but putting it down as not strict enough.

  1. I stay clear of any negative energy.  Putting other people down for not living your lifestyle usually means to me that you are not happy and don't want anyone else to be happy either.

The bottom line is that if being veg makes you happy, be veg.  But letting people who are not veg or more veg make you unhappy is giving them control over your life.  Why let someone you don't have respect for have an influence on your happiness?

  2. I think it's wonderful you're trying to transition to vegan.  I don't consider VegNews negative (and I think Vegetarian Times is more geared towards folks who are trying to reduce meat consumption, not towards veg*ans).  However, many vegans believe that dairy and eggs are two of the cruelest foods around.  Of all the animals exploited for "food," hens have it the worst.

  3. dont mind them... ^^ you know ur lucky that ur a vegetarian

  4. Could you maybe give an example of how VegNews is "negative" towards vegetarians?

It's kind of stupid to publish recipes in a vegetarian magazine that can't be used by vegan and vegetarian people. There are already plenty of meatless recipes in mainstream publications.

Either way, the dairy and egg industries are even more cruel than the meat industry, so where is the sense in catering to just vegetarians when vegetarians can eat vegan food?

I don't condone putting vegetarians down and I'd like to see an example of VegNews doing just that, but it is a vegetarian magazine. Unless it is called Lacto-Ovo-VegNews, they don't have to pretend that not all animal products cause harm. I would rather eat hunted meat than eggs or dairy.

  5. It makes them feel better about themselves.

  6. Actually, I found that Vegetarian Times does have a lot of Vegan recipes, and they label them.  I think they do encourage a vegan diet, but are open to the lacto-ovo, so do provide recipes for that one.

Vegans do feel the need to show that just cutting out meat is still supporting the cruelty towards cows and chickens in the production of milk and eggs.  The cruelty is true though.  I'm not a vegan, but I do respect them and I try to adapt my diet towards more of a vegan inclination.

As a vegetarian, I appreciate it when people do try to cut meat out of their diet, even if they're not vegetarian.  For example, my in-laws are limiting their meat to one meal instead of 2-3 per day.  I'm glad that they're purchasing less meat products, and maybe they'll try the vegetarian diet when we move in with them next year :)

I think, as animal rights activists, we should respect eachother's attempts to help this horrid problem.  I know that as a vegetarian, I could still do more, but I'm glad I'm doing so much already.

  7. Well don't read it then.

  8. I'm going to go back through my magazines now that you brought it up.  I'm vegan so maybe I didn't notice it.

Does Vegetarian Times do the same thing about meat eaters?  Would a meat eater be offended if they were trying to become vegetarian?  Just trying to put it into perspective.  VegNews is a vegan publication.

  9. Try Vegetarian Times. I love it! The recipes are great, but they don't stop there. They've always got new info on animal friendly products and organizations. It's very well written.
