Why is a 1922 copper penny worth so much more than a 1923 copper penny?

  1. I think you may have your facts a little wrong.
    True there were alot more 1923 Pennies minted, but those were silver not copper. There were only about 8 million 1923 coppers minted. The value of a 1922 copper at most in mint condition is around $3000 while a mint condition 1923 copper can go for well over $12000.
    It all has to do with the shortage of copper during WWI, so instead of the mints using copper (because the US needed it for bullets)they used silver.
