Why is a 2mp camera bad but a 2mp camera phone great?

If you bought a 2mp digital camera you would of waisted your money. If you purchase a 2mp camera phone then you end up with decend pictures, how is this?

well for a camera to have 2mp is really bad because it's a camera and it is designed to take high quality pictures. Whereas a cellphone is designed to call people and taking pictures is a bonus.

2mp is the same on a camera and a cellphone, but it's the purpose of the device that makes this relevant.

A 2mp camera phone can take good pictures, but they can not be blown up at all! Anything bigger than the (cellphone) screen size and they are bad quality.

If this is all you need, a 2mp camera is fine for you.

But to print even good quality 4x6s i would recommend a 5mp camera at least!

I dont know too much about megapixels but basically, a camera phone is a bonus, so a 2mp bonus is great! But on a camera, good quality photos is to be expected, so 2mp is horrible!

Think you might be misinformed.  There are many very good, but older 2 MP cameras, particularly from Canon or Sony.  Some quick examples of good 2MP cameras include Canon A40, A60, and S200.  Although these cameras are no longer in production, they still produce quality pictures and prints up to and including 8 x10.  Seriously doubt any current 2MP phone camera can match the quality of their pictures.  And to top it off, these days you can purchase these "previously owned" gems for very little cost via ebay.

The difference in picture quality between a dedicated camera and a phone camera can be dramatic, especially in low light situations.  The camera has dedicated and usually much higher quality optics, and likely a much larger image sensor than the camera phone (look on your phone cam, see it's tiny len?  Now look at a real camera's lens.  Notice how it's much bigger) .  Also, how many camera phones have a flash?

The camera on the phone is just a bonus. Anything that takes a picture will work fine. If you buy a camera it is so you can take pictures. It'd better do it well since that is its sole purpose in life.

A 2 mp camera is not the greatest because there is much better quality. Even past 10 mp. 6 mp will do you just fine though. A 2 mp phone is very good, because there isnt much better available on a phone. Plus, you are paying for a phone, so the camera is a bonus feature.
