  1. big things come in small packages

  2. All batteries that are classified as "dry cells" whether they be plain old carbon zinc, or alkaline are made up of 1.5 volt cells connected together to make whatever volt battery you desire.

Just as a D battery and a AAA are both a single cell and furnish 1.5 volts, they are different sizes because the D battery hold more capacity in Amperage than the AAA size does.

The more power you want a battery to hold for your use, the larger it has to be.  The cells in a 9 volt batters are tiny because they do not hold nearly as much power. There are actually 6 tiny 1.5 volt cells that make up a 9 volt battery.

  3. The 6-volt battery can deliver much more current, and therefore more power than the 9-volt battery.
