Why is a Cucumber wrapped in siliphene(spelling?) but other fruits like Tomatos arent?

It was a totally random question i was asked today, and i honestly dont know but want to know, the answer.

The only cucumber that is wrapped in cellophane is the "Japanese Cucumber." It is wrapped to keep it fresher longer because it costs nearly ten times more than a regular hothouse cucumber.

And it has a nicer flavor!
