  1. Better traction, lighter steering, much fewer parts means less weight  and cheaper to build, ease of service as the engine can be dropped out as an assembly on a jack, no transmission tunnel gives more interior space. Renault, Chevrolet, Hillman and NSU also tried the rear engine configuration as do many race cars.

  2. Only the 94 and earlier models VW beetles have the trunk at the front, the engine is in the rear, there is all so space for baggage behind the rear seats. They are great toy cars.

  3. I don't think the new beetle models have the engine in the back. but answering your question it is because when they developed those small cars were with the idea for working class families who couldn't afford to use big amounts of gas.

When the engine is in the front the car pulling, but when is the back is pushing. this way the engine doesn't work too hard and so the burning of gas will be less, also the oil because the cooling system wouldn't  use water, but air from the engine rotation, the more the car would run the more air will cool the engine.

  4. because they wanted like that and because is cool.

  5. The beatle didn't have a drive shaft, the engine and transmission are both in the rear, that left the trunk in the front where the spare is also.  Rear wheel drive, weight over the axle, helps the car go well in snow and off road.

  6. Because the engine is in the back.

  7. cause its cooler that way.

    (:

  8. Because when they built the first one, Volkswagen put the engine in the rear. That was never changed.

  9. The original VW Bug was made with the engine in the back because with it's smaller engine it's cheaper to make so that it would be affordable to the ordinary folks. It's mostly air cooled (like the Porsche *the Beetle and the Porsche was designed by the same person*). With the engine already in the back, VW got rid of the big drive shafts that are present in the front mounted engines. Makes it cheaper! The Bug also was used a lot during the war in Europe. Keeping the engine in the back of the car makes it more reliable to keep the car moving when the car is fired upon in the front.

  10. The old Beetle had the engine in the back.

The newer one has it in the front.

Ferdinand Porsche is the founder of Porsche and VW.

    He designed the VW Beetle.

Porsche's use rear mounted boxer engines and the Beetle used a rear mounted boxer engine.

The engine in the back allows better traction for RWD cars and quicker acceleration.

Plus, Ferdinand Porsche prefered to have the engine in the back. It is safer that way. If there is a fire, the smoke would not block the windshield and cause a crash. It was a smart decision.

Let me ask you this. Why do they put engines in the front of cars?
