Why is a british passport so expensive?

I want to apply for a renewal and i found out its £72 why are they so expensive now?does anyone know?its rediculous

The government wanted to collect income from citizens and it is the reason why the passport is expensive.  Likewise, there are many security features in the making of the passport to avoid being copied for fraudulent schemes.
