  1. It's tapered towards the top so that rain can run off more quickly.


  2. Any building would look really stupid pointed towards the bottom.  Even my own house is pointed towards the top.

  3. Steeples and spires are symbols, pointing to the heavens above. In the case of a cathedral, the whole building tapers because it has to, to be structurally sound and support the huge domed roof. Some even have external buttressing to support the heavier walls while preventing the walls from bowing outwards from the huge weight of ceilings made of stone which appear to be tapered, but are not.

  4. The old concept of god, a being in the sky, is still very popular today. The steeples, or "God Antennas", point in that direction.
