  1. Well, that is kinda a hard question to answer.

I mean why is an apple an apple? Why is a dog called a dog?

I guess just whoever invented the concept of a cookie came up with the word.

  2. It's originally from Dutch koekje, meaning "little cake" (cake is koek).

Cookie is also a regional word.  In most places in the US it's basically a small "cake" made from very stiff dough (if you look at the recipes for basic cookies and cakes, you'll see that they are almost the same).

However, in the South it's sometimes a doughnut or other round fried sweet bread, and in Scotland it's a bun (literally a "little cake").

By the way, the typical American cookie is called a "biscuit" in the UK.  And an American biscuit is basically a British scone.  Confusing, eh?

  3. a chocolate cookie is one type of cookie. like, for example, cake. would chocolate chip cake not be cake?

  4. Maybe back in the day these little round sweets made the children kooky and someone said "Honey I think we should call these things cookies because of our kooky kids."

Oh man I need to go to bed.............did I really just give that answer.  sigh......
