  1. Hi,

There are a few reasons for such perception :

    1. PREFORMED IDEAS : People listen to the horror stories from friends and family. Therefore, they come with fear to begin with.

    2. FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN : You get either scared or remain calm only if you have the right information prior to the dental visit. Unfortunately, there is low level of awarenesss among people in terms of dental needs and the scope of dentistry. You will definitely get scared when you don't know what to expect.

    3. PEOPLE ASSOCIATE PAIN WITH DENTISTRY : That is because:

    a) People usually come to the dentist only when they have to. They tend to put it off for as long as possible. When they ultimately show up, they are already in pain. Amazingly, people do not remember that the visit to the dentist gets them out of pain. Instead they think of the pain and the dental visit synonymously.

    b) Unfortunately, performing the dental procedures require administering dental anesthesia. That is uncomfortable and by some people's standard, "painful". Therefore, in short, we "inflict pain" to get you out of pain.

    4. OVERALL PERCEPTION ABOUT DENTISTRY :

No matter what, Dentistry is considered optional. When people go to a medical doctor, even if the visit is painful, that is considered a life-saving visit. The thought of the benefit outweighs the fear.

On the other hand, going to the dentist is viewed something optional...or maybe something that can wait.

    b) Also, there is little awareness that even certain dental situations can also get life-threatening.

As a result, when there is seemingly no apparent benefit, why would anybody want to electively get hurt ?

There is, therefore, a selective mental block about the utility and phobia takes over.

Hopefully, the more we can promote dental awareness, the less will be such behavior.

  2. A dental clinic/office regarded with fear Bcause there is a mind set up as a fear 2 a preganent women during delivery time. That's not a joke.

  3. What kind of answer are you looking for....stupid horror stories?

My office is like a spa, water fountain outside, large windows with beautiful views, calming colors and soothing music.  We make every patient feel comfortable and welcomed....the fear is gone, the minute they step through the door.

  4. The drilling sound, not the actual drilling but the sound....hahah

  5. Actually this is a great question. I hate going to the dentist myself. I recently broke down and had to go again because I had a tooth ache. What I hate most is having to get numbed up. I hate the feeling. Also I think the drilling noise gets to a lot of people.

  6. I actually work at a dentist office and hardly and of our patients are scared of the dentist.  The only time they really ever are is when they are transferring from another office.  Most people are scared of the feeling and atmosphere of the dentist office.

  7. HEY,
