  1. It's because a "jet" refers to a narrow stream of fluid, like a "jet of water" squirting out a hose. Squids use jet propulsion, squirting a narrow stream of water out from tubes in their bodies.

Jet engines, first flown in Germany, generate thrust by taking a narrow stream of air and heating it and accelerating it to a very high speed, rather than taking a large diameter stream of air and accelerating it backwards comparatively slowly with a propellor.

So basically the "jet" part refers to the narrowness of the thrust from the engines, to distinguish the propulsion type from an aircraft with a propellor.

There are a few different types of jet engine, such as resonant or pulse jets, ram-jets, turbo jets and turbofans.

Pulse jets and Ram jets have almost no moving parts, but turbojets and turbo fans have spinning turbines and are known as gas turbines.

A rocket could be said to provide "jet propulsion" but under common usage the air-breathing characteristic of a jet engine differentiates it from a rocket which carries its own oxidant.

Some aircraft also use gas turbine engines to spin a gearbox and drive a propellor. these are known as turboprops. The same sorts of engines often drive helicopter rotors, which is why helis can sound like jetplanes. In the case of turboprops and helicopters, the exhaust from the engine makes negligible contribution to the thrust.

  2. The jet plane uses jet power, instead of turbo or piston power to turn propellers. How's that??

  3. Because it is powered by jet engine rather than a turbo prop.

How do you make it home anyway?

  4. Because if you called it "Fred,"  people wouldn't know what you were talking about.

  5. Its a type of plane that is more modern than the original turbo prop planes like in WWI or WWII.

  6. jet planes are powered by jet engines, which are faster than propellered powered planes,

this is good if you want more info on jet planes,

  7. it is a hold over from a song written by John Denver "Leaving on a Jet Plane" in 1967 during a layover at an airport in Washington and recorded by the Mitchell Trio .

  8. because it is powered by jet engines because in 1949/50's planes were starting to be powered by jets ex De Havilland Comet 1 & 2 , Boeing 707-120/138 The one developed espessically for QANTAS/220/320/420
