That would be because you are crossing TWO lanes of traffic as opposed to the one, if you turn right.

Think of a picture of an intersection, you'll get it then.

From someone writing from a place where we drive on the right (left) side of the road... it's only more dangerous if you drive on the wrong (right) side of the road.
