Because when the Government screws up a market economy it can blame it on uncontrollable market forces.

Command limits personal freedom and is controlled by the government. Market economy allows limited government interface.

a market economy is more efficient because resources go where they're needed most, not where one person decides they're needed

a market economy has a mechanism for determining who gets what -- prices.  thus, you don't have to wait 6 hours in line for toilet paper.

a market economy also innovates well, because profits are an incentive to think of new products that people want.
