  2. Regular miles are 5280 feet...

    Nautical miles are 6000 feet.

  3. In order to divide a circular Earth (actually an oblate spheroid) into equal parts the statute land mile had to be extended from 5,280 feet to 6076 feet so that celestial navigation using the Sextant could be achieved.

    Using 6,076 feet to the mile allows the earch to be divided into a 360 degree circle, again, for calculations using the Sextant.
