I don't think they've made my life better. If anything they are one of the things I loathe the most.

  1. A penny is a beginning and a reminder. It begins the money chain and it is a reminder that the sum of many quickly amounts to larger members of the money chain. Thus a penny is also the beginning of wealth.

  2. I believe the phrase was written when a penny was actually worth finding. Perhaps a newer version like find a Franklin pick it up, blah blah blah... it might make more sense. If I found a hundrd dollar bill I think I would consider it a pretty lucky day...

  3. From my understanding, it's more finding a penny that is lucky.

It could also come from old beliefs that if you put a coin in your shoes or in the foundation of your home then you will have more prosperity/money.

  4. Where I come from, they're only lucky if you find them. Then they have to be face up.  After that, you have to put the penny in your shoe all day.  I shudder to think what might happen if you left out any of these steps! LOL!

Haven't you heard "Find a penny, pick it up.  All the day you'll have good luck."?

Are you picking up pennies when they're face down??? That could be source of your loathing.  That and the fact that they aren't worth much anymore.  ;^)
