The first rugby balls I believe were made out of pigs bladders.  This is the natural shape it gets when stuffed/inflated.  This is the reason they call a football a "pigskin" American football was created to be a safer version of rugby (the americans at the time had very strange and dangerous rugby rules that differed from the rest of the world and many prople got hurt)
