  1. The first rugby balls I believe were made out of pigs bladders.  This is the natural shape it gets when stuffed/inflated.  This is the reason they call a football a "pigskin" American football was created to be a safer version of rugby (the americans at the time had very strange and dangerous rugby rules that differed from the rest of the world and many prople got hurt)


  2. it is easy to carry and run.

  3. same reason a football is, so that it can be tucked to carry it and so that it is easy to throw in a spiral, also easy to make a controled kick like in football.
