  1. Simply put, the terrain is MUCH different in Washington and Iowa.

    Washington has coastal currents of air and mountains to break up any forming patterns of air that would cause a tornado.

    Iowa is primarily flat so the atmosphere has a chance to mix currents without anything breaking them up.

    Also, the terrain leading INTO Iowa is good for the air currents to mix. You can get a nice steady flow of warm air form the South that mixes with the colder air of the north. The place of collision is right over the midwest plains.


  2. Most storms form in the trough of a jet stream and most of the time the trough is over mid section of US and the ridge is over Washington
