  1. God knows! we call it a double mattress in Australia, and I believe the Brit's do too!


  2. Back in the olden days, or about 1980 and earlier, there was usually more than one child per house. There could be as many as 10 to 14 ( we are Irish Roman Catholics) and kids would actually share a room.

    Two beds would fit in most rooms and they would match. like twins. Hence the name.

    I didn't get my own room until I was about 22 and living off-campus.. A few years later I got my own house. Then I got married to and took on  a wife and three daughters. I went from a three bedroom house all to my self to a half a bed and a dresser.

    Two of the daughters shared a room until we bought a big house.

  3. well, from watching old 50s TV sitcoms, there were those married couples who slept in separate twin beds...doubt that happened in reality, I think they just taped it that way for the family viewers LOL
