  1. As usual, anything in an aircraft is a series of compromises since designers must make tradeoffs between solutions that might conflict with one another. Once such example is the electrical system on an airplane. The advantage of running an electrical system at 400 Hz rather than 50/60 Hz is that the power supplies are smaller and lighter. This means there is some weight and space reduction. However reduction in weight comes at a price, since electrical systems at high-frequencies are less efficient.

    I guess you get the picture now. The keyword is tradeoff, tradeoff between weight, space, effiency and performance. The 115V 400 Hz gives the most practical solution and there you go!
