Why is alcohol a good way to sterilize surgical equipment?

I'll let you guess.  Either:

- The alcohol makes germs drunk to the point of incompetence.  They fall asleep and neglect to infect the patient.

or:

- Pure alcohol is deadly beyond the understanding of the word known by the makers of Domestos detergent.  It doesn't only kill 99% of all known germs.  It does things democraticly by killing all known germs off, and also does in any it's not made an acquaintanceship with before.

If offered the choice between either drinking a glass of pure alcohol or breaking the glass up and swallowing that, your survival prospects would be higher with the second option.
