I recently went on a cruise and I only saw one American staff member during my stay. Many countries from all over the world were represented in the crew. Any idea why this might be? Thank you.

  1. A lot of it has to do with our laws about working overtime and taking breaks and thing like that. Many people working on cruise ships will work way more then 40 hours a week, and often with only 1/2 days off in a month. In the united states, we get paid overtime for working more then 40 hours a week. So therefor they don't hire Americans because they can't give them the time off that they should get.

  2. just think if they can work together on a ship why cant they work together in the real world and there would be no more hatered !

  3. Well, there are two big reasons:

    (1) Opportunities.  Someone in the US has a lot of opportunities to get a well-paying job, at least in comparison with someone from Eastern Europe, Southeast Asia, etc.  Working on a cruise ship is a very hard job (7 days a week, 10-12 hours a day), and not worth the pay for most Americans.

    (2) Taxes.  US citizens pay full income tax on their earnings regardless of where they work.  Citizens of some countries (I believe including Canada, though I'm not 100% sure) pay little or no tax if they work at sea.

And if you'd like to share your thoughts about your cruise, I'm sure people would love to read about anything you'd like to share...

  4. Becuase they dont make diddly squat for cash in dollars. You give your server a $3.50 tip in dollars and he/she goes back to their home country and it is worth $20. You bring is back to the United States and it is still only $3.50. No american would work for that amount.

  5. Because for people from foreign its a steady job and that is good money for them. They can travel, send some to their family or whatever. People who live in the US can make MUCH more money than that--and have a ton more opportunity.
