Why is an ACL tear so damaging to athletes?

For instance, UCLA quarterback Pat Cowan tore his ACL and is out for the season when it happened in spring training. Why is it so damaging to athletes and why is it so difficult to fix?

  1. A tear to your ACL makes the knee very unstable (and very painful).  After the ACL is surgically repaired it's more vulnerable to future injuries than it initally was.  Plus, the surgery has a long recovery time.
