Why is an alarm clock going “off” when it actually turns on?

  2. It's really not turning on, the alarm is just activated.  But back when old alarm clocks were first made, they were the wind up kind, and the user wound the key tightly and when the clock struck the proper time, the alarm would sound until it unwound, and then I guess it went "off".

    Why do you "dial" a cell phone?
