  1. Guinea pigs are animals and therefore testing on guinea pigs is as unethical as testing on other animals.

The issue of animal testing is a complicated one. Much of the testing done is unnecessary. There are viable alternatives to animal testing in many or most cases but they are more expensive. Thus the real issue in most cases is not "we must test on animals to benefit humans" but rather "We must test on animals because it saves us money."

While it may be that there are a few cases where animal testing is unavoidable (and then we get into the debate as to whether the benefits justify the means - another topic), the goal should be to reduce animal testing as much as possible and when used, to make that testing as non-damaging and non-painful to the animal as is humanly possible. The science supports the idea that much animal testing is not only unnecessary, it is also inaccurate and not a good methodology given new technologies.

Here is a good link to the Humane Society of the United States  that provides an overview of alternatives as well as some of the facts about animal testing.

  2. Yea it's a good question.  I am a genetics student but I believe animals should only be sacrificed when really necessary. If you want any new treatments to be developed for people then animals will have to be tested, or their body parts used, before exposing people to them.  Even before developing treatments, how could we even learn about some proteins that are only produced by animals (not bacteria, fungi or plants) without using animals. Some can be acquired by taking samples from live subjects (people or animals) by blood tests or the likes, but many proteins are specifically expressed in liver or other organs.  To get these proteins the organs will need to be homogenised and go through purification, so animals would have to die. I just hope animals used in these situations are killed quickly and painlessly.  It's harder for people to understand if they haven't learnt a bit a about science, scientific methods, or even physiology perhaps, but not all of us scientists are into 'science at any cost', I like to think I'm a bit of a hippy scientist, I only like science that helps people or nature.

I'm sorry Michaell... but you have no idea, there i soooo much more to be discovered.  And cancer is a hugely diverse field, each different type of cancer is caused by different genes and mutations and one type of cancer can be caused by many different mutations or combonation of mutations.  Scientist don't LIKE using animals (not any I know anyway) we are trying to help people (and animals in veterinary research).  I think animal use could definately be reduced, I agree with that whole heartedly, but some will always be needed.

Ask yourself this, would you use a medical product if you were told it had never been administered to any living creature?

  3. YES ! absolutely right !  The torture o f  these animals is one

    and the same.

I believe that the world does not need do this anymore to a great

extent as they pretend they do.   The cosmetic industry has got

all the information it wants.  We need some common sense and

to see this form of animal torture in this day and age STOPPED!

The cure for Cancer and so on , we have so much information on

computer....animals need to be given a break.   I believe new laws

should be introduced such as .... you will have the FREE Funding

that you keep collecting by government and charities , reduced

every 4 years you are ;not putting any results out there !!

And that all results be reviewed by Valid people.

This way this constant Bleeding of begging for more and more and

more ...with no results, Stops and the Constant excuse to torture

    live animals !

I believe this could truly work, as if someone truly stumbled upon

a TRUE  Discovery, then they would stop at nothing to prove that

    point to us !

I also dissaprove of Forensic ... it is mostly a load of ........ shore

extra evidence is required in a violent situation.

But the extent they go to is too far, the Computers are so advanced

show a body totally 3D and more if you know the Advanced programs.

And which specialist dosnt ?. Do peoples relatives have to be cut

up just to appease a student ? ...... it is bull and hope more like

myself speak out against these two inhumane practices.[Speak out

more often , just say something, it is better than been silent on this

and expecting all to change...it wont without people speaking out !]

  4. Actually, organizations against animal cruelty protest ALL forms of animal testing, whether for industry or medicine.
