  1. i think in the realm of theatre, auditioning is the hardest thing actors have to do. it's one of those one shot deals and there in lies the pressure. a lot of actors are stuck in their own heads to begin with, but once you apply the pressure of not just getting it right but getting it absolutely right in order to get a job, it can get overwhelming. plus, you're not doing if for an audience that will enjoy being taken on story. you're performing for people who are essentially your peers and your competitors as well as the added bonus that they're ALL critiquing your. from a director thinking you may be too old, too big, too dark, not loud enough from fellow actors thinking that you suck, that you missed that moment, that you let your sentence drop instead of lifting it. there's so much chaotic energy! but it's really A LOT of mind over...your mind, really.

  2.    An audition is a test; a way of securing if one can, the reward they hope for. The proof, in passing the test, will make all those hours, sitting in some waiting room, nervously; worth the sweat and nail biting.

  3. For the real thing, you've had weeks of repetitive preparation. You have the masks of wardrobe, set dressing, props, and all that go with actual performances. For auditions you have only you, your voice, a few sides to read and your skill. Unenhanced by any of the above. Plus, the pressure is entirely different.

  4. They want to see if you are cut out for the job. And also, auditions all you have to work with is yourself and a few hired personal coaches. When you are preparing to be onstage, you have directors, producers, choreographers, other actors, writers, singing coaches, acting coaches...everyone there is to help you and prepare you to do the best that you can.
