Question:

Why is being fat such a horrible thing?

Why does everyone seem to hate being fat or the idea of getting fat? Why is it so socially unacceptable to be fat or thick, whatever you want to call it? Why is the world obsessed with weight? These are questions I would love to hear serious answers to.

  1. You must also consider that it is the style of the milenia " thin is in"

In Mideaval Times people tried to be fat to show that they could afford prosperity and survive the could. Being thin then showed that you were poor. Now being fat just means you are poor and thin people are health jerks......

  2. Personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with being fat. I'd rather not be fat because it can be unhealthy in some aspects. As for appearance, that should mean nothing.

I think our society is brainwashed and it is almost like a mental illness to be so obsessive about it. I know there are many countries in the world where this is not even an issue because it is more socially acceptable, even desirable. Here in the US, that's not the case. The reason I think this is brainwash is because I think that the leaders of our country (not just politicians, but media leaders, all the big wigs, etc.) use this type of thing as a distraction (one of the many distractions) to what is really going on in this country. They want us to focus on our weight rather than more serious problems that are going on without us noticing. So it's all over the media, they bash it into all of us everyday of our lives. That's just my personal take on the whole thing.

  3. There's this idea around that everyone should be so slim and trim as this will guarantee that either they will land the love of their life or at the very least get lots and lots of s*x.  Both notions are utterly untrue.  But look at the images in our magazines these days.  The ladies have perfect everything, the men are buff and rugged.  These are the images of glamor today.  People who buy into them are just plain dumb.

  4. Because of the media and the twisted standards of beauty these days. :( This can also sprout from the basic-est of preferences of the opposite gender, like you wouldn't choose a partner who will probably die of a heart attack at 30 or something. >.<

  5. I've never experienced discrimination in this area due to never having a weight issue, but as ladycath just mentioned - it is unhealthy.

Obviously - this shouldn't give anyone a green light to judge or make fun of someone that struggles with weight.

WiseGal - What you just mentioned - Ann Coulter comes to mind. Not sure why any guy would want to date someone that skinny.

  6. Why should it HAVE to be acceptable to everyone? Not noticing someones weight is about as likely as not noticing if someones male or female. I think a little extra padding is okay (h**l, I'm not exactly skinny) but I don't see why being OBESE should be okay and why I'm supposed to embrace it with wide open arms. When I see someone who's obese I think to myself that maybe they have a thyroid condition or something but then I meet the 8/10 that really just gave up on themselves and I'm supposed to feel sorry for them. Why do I hate the idea of getting fat? Because I have enough respect for myself to care for my body, want to look good for MYSELF and I enjoy being able to do activities that extra weight would make d**n near impossible. Sure someone should be judged by character not appearance but as long as people have eyes it's just not going to happen.

  7. Speaking as a fat person,I'm 5'10 and weigh 330 lbs.. I'm 45 years old and I look as if I'm 30. My hair is still black with not one gray hair in it,and I don't even have a receding hairline.

Yet by looking at me no one would guess I speak four languages ,and I know my hometown in South Texas like the back of my hand. I've even had younger guys than me at work  ask why women  would rather speak to me than them. It's your attitude that another person sees, and how you carry yourself when communicating with others.

  8. because some people seem to think that other people's health is their business.  it's all those commercials about eating healthy.  it's the same way about when someone sees someone smoking a cigarette.  they feel the need to tell you how to live.

i am technically obese but have no high blood pressure, no diabetes and i am active.  i weigh about 260 or so and i am only 5'6" and several people have seen me eating lunch and commented you know that's not good for you.  they just feel it is their business.  ignore the stupid people.  it's your body, not theirs.

  9. It's society telling everyone that have to be thin.  I also believe it is OK to have a little fat padding.  If you get seriously ill and lose your appetite or can't eat because you are barfing for a week, your fat reserve will help you out a bit.

By the way, being fat is in the eye of the beholder.  During the Renaissance times, there were many paintings done of women between 180 and 220 pounds.  Their version of beauty is different than ours.

I also think anyone who would say they'd "just die" if they get fat need to remove themselves from society right now.  That's the type of negativity that makes people prejudiced against others.

  10. WELL, it wouldn't be if you fat people could actually reach around your gigantic body to wash...

    Or wipe.....ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

AND Because it is unhealthy, good enough?

  11. Look all i am saying is i am FAT i love it that way, i don't care people think as long as i am comfort table i am FAT i look good with it and it is not every one look good slim, or thin, people calls me name too like teddy bear i love that one, pig, sponge bob etc. But i don't because they are not perfect, they find fault of me and i find it back on them, my self esteem is very him and you need to make yours high too!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. i would never allow myself to get fat, because being overweight is unattractive.  Being fat is also unhealthy.  there are many diseases that can be caused by being overweight or obese

  13. I think people are heavily influenced by the media and Hollywood stars etc. They play a big part in what we think or act, and if they hate the concept of being fat, then other people get influenced by it.

The only ethical problem I can see with it is heath problems.

  14. As others have stated, the media plays a huge role in what we perceive as what's attractive. I agree there are are health concerns with being overweight, but this isn't a worldwide obsession.

For example, in rural Jamaica "plumpness is considered to be important or vital to good health. The desired body is plump, full of vital bodily fluids, and the flow of substances through the body is maintained, both of which are contributing factors to good health. Any disruption in this flow or lack of bodily fluids is considered to be unhealthy and contributes to sickness. Being thin is associated with bad health, and is a factor which affects social relationships. A slim person, especially a slim woman, is called a mauger - meagre and powerless - as if not alive at all, and like a mummy or an empty husk, far beyond that powerfully dangerous state of decay. A thin, dry body reveals a person's non-nurturant nature and his or her lack of social commitment. Being plump is associated with good social relationships, and a thin person is associated with bad social relationships."

In my own opinion, I'd much rather have a woman who's overweight than  one who looks like a walking skeleton, and there's nothing attractive about a woman who's obsessed with their weight (fat or skinny).

On another note, why don't you ever see a fat female avatar here?

  15. it is NOT a horrible thing but can be unhealthy.

Marilon Monroe was a size 14..

  16. too many teens obsess on weight as that is what they

have grown up hearing that fat or any extra pound is

ugly etc. Most guys I know prefer a female with some

extra roundness as those slender stick girls really do

have the figure of little  young boys though some men may

actually like that...eww..I remember watching Dynasty with a

male friend and asking do you think SammyJO (Heather Locklear)

is s**y and cute , she was rolling in bed with some guy

My friend said well she is too skinny I would be afraid

of getting splinters with her, look at her back all the bones

are sticking out like starving kids in 3 world countries.

anyway I think most tv girls are too skinny and need some

pounds to fill out faces and bodies...

  17. Hollywood standards and what mags and media want you to believe... looking terrible fat is actually not good for your health but i don't think that a size 10 is that fat!

  18. Thick is not the same as fat. Having a few extra pounds is not horrible. what is horrible is when a person gets fat enough to cause health problems.

  19. Health issues aside, it says alot about a persons state of mind. Nobody deep down wants to be fat. It says quite alot about self esteem and things like that.
