Question:

Why is being rude so bad?

For yesterday's dinner, my whole family got together. One of my uncles was making gargling, sucking sounds with his mouth when he was eating and it was very irritating. So, some of my family members complained and my uncle responded with, "My gargling doesn't hurt anybody. You're still gonna be alive." in a sarcastic tone. After dinner, I overheard one of the family members insulting my uncle (of course, my uncle wasn't there).

So why is being rude so bad? Doesn't it "not hurt anybody"?

  1. It's just disrespectful.

  2. It does. It makes ppl look down upon you, and makes you seem uncivilized. It ruins the atmosphere of the room, and it says "I have no respect for my host of his/her guests."

  3. being rude is bad period

your not supposed to be rude so i guess its bad.

  4. It's unfortunate to see people so disrespectful of other people's feelings really.

It's true, it won't kill you but that doesn't mean it doesn't hurt you in a way. It can offend you, irritate you, bother you, etc.

I feel for you because that drives me nuts sometimes. I think I might be forced to walk away from family dinner if something like that happened to me...

Really though, there's not much reasoning with him I don't think. He doesn't seem to understand that just because something doesn't kill you or doesn't hurt you that it can still bother you.

You can try explaining that it bothers you and that you'd like to ask him to stop out of respect for you and your family, but he may just reply with the same defensive sarcasm.

I know it's hard, but try to either let it go or avoid those moments really... that's what I would do.

  5. wdbjdfb i can't stand people eating.

  6. Being rude is fine, it's just that everyone will hate you.

  7. If you're a rude person it will hurt you.  You might find yourself alone if no one likes you.

  8. because if people fall outside the nor of what is "socially acceptable" then its classed as being rude

i wouldnt say it hurt anyoine maybe just offended them

  9. cause its rude

  10. yeah, but it is still offensive.  that's like saying if a person farted right in your face that 'it's not going to kill you'

    lol

but the point is, it's just not good to be rude, that's how it has always been.

  11. Well it doesn't hurt anyone physically.  However it hurts people mentally, so that's why it's usually a bad thing.  There's that cliche "Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me"  Well apparently it sounded like the uncle took that saying too literally.  If someone kept garglin at the table and made that remark to me, I'd be really p*ssed off.  Rudeness doesn't physically hurt people in the short run, but it might in the long run.  For example, if a person has been tolerating rude people on a regular basis at a job for a number of years, then it will start to take a toll on his/her mental health and he/she will be suffering stress, anxiety, and depression which puts him/her at a much greater rich for physical health problems such as stroke, heart attack, and lowered immune system.  Anyway, I'm sure your uncle still has good intentions and didn't mean any harm.

  12. Making gargling sucking sounds is not the proper way to act in public. True, it doesn't hurt "anyone" but that's not the issue.

There are proper ways to behave in public and making disgusting noises (purposefully in this case) is not proper.

If one has a medical condition (like Tourette's Syndrome), then, you can make allowances for the individual.

In your uncle's case, he doesn't care. He's being a bully and boor/pig.
