Probably because he has a big mouth and is being hypocritical about girls who win Gold when he coached 14 year old Nadia Comenici while using tactics learned in communist Romania which made him his name.

No-one would even know who he was if it wasn't for her and her perfect 10.

When Karoly coached the Romanian team the minimum age for women gymnasts was 14 yrs -- so Nadia was legal.  It has been fairly recent that the min age was raised to 16 -- there was even an attempt to raise it to 18.  

The "big deal" about the min age is that women's bodies change shape and weight at puberty and allowing pre-puescent girls to compete against mature women gives them a BIG advantage.  This year's US team is 3 inches taller and 30 lbs heavier than the Chinese team, on average.  Thirty lbs is a BIG difference!

Bela Karoly has retired from gymnastic coaching, His wife still operates their training center and is coach of the US women's gymnastic team.

The Chinese Gymnasts are,on average, 4'9" and weigh 74 lbs.  I certainly hope our girls are taller and heavier.
