I think your real question is why didn't Beth take her husband's name. Or, why didn't the husband take the last name of Whetton? Why should a woman take the man's name? Is she a possession? Is she like cattle which must be branded to show ownership? "You may now kiss the bride" - why not you may now kiss the husband? Sounds like you may now have your way with your new possession.  The father gives away the bride - I didn't know you could give away a person. We have a long way to go folks..
