Why is britain called great, and why united kingdom?

i am a big supporter of the UK sticking together. as one country we are strong but divided we are weak.

Its the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" to give it its full name.

Great Britain consists of England, Scotland, Wales. It also includes the small adjacent islands but it does not include the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.
