  1. High enough pressure under air temps to require strength - sphere has greatest volume to area of material required.   Propane is stored in cylinders with rounded ends for balance of strength and convenience of spacing as a sphere wastes much of the space around it.

    Silos are cylinders, not spheres.


  2. a sphere gives the best strength to weight ratio. a cylinder has sharp corners which can be weak spots with a large internal pressure.

  3. Reduces the surface area ,so it will not blow up the tank. LB per sq. in.

  4. helps fuel ease to valve.

    same reason grain is stored in spherical silos
