  1. cartilage is there to support the bony part of the breathing system.

    It is necessary on the wall of the trachae.

    Also, to support the trachea. If the rings were not there or if there were not a positive air pressure to keep this area open, it would close on its own because of the surrounding force of the body would close it. If they werent there you would gurgle upon inhalation and exhalation.

    it can flex when u move yr neck- and move when u swallow air
