  1. Because most cave paintings discovered were in deeper & darker parts of the caves, it is suspected that they were religious symbols painted by those hoping to affect the outcomes of the hunt or other tribal endeavors.   These paintings were only viewable by torch light & were obviously not placed where the casual observerer would see them.  Therefore, most conclude they were ceremonial in nature.

  2. It exists because they expressed things artistically just as modern humans do. And, if you look at a lot of cave art you will notice that little has changed in men from then until now.

The most common elements in cave art are the same two things men still think about most - women and food.

  3. Cave paintings were done as a way to communicate and to relate stories, concerns and information for others. This seemingly artistic expression is a type of hieroglyphics and was a precursor to the written word.

  4. Some anthropologists believe that it was like a worship ceremony where someone would describe "the kill"  and they would velieve that the picture would help make it come true. I like to think that it was just some local artist drawing things about his daily life. Any guess is as good as another. Maybe they thought it would be useful to put the information down about a particular hunt and kill that was magnificent and a real story to remember..... one never knows for sure. Luckily they have survived so that atleast we know that they were really there.

  5. They exist because the people who put them there realized they would last a long time.  They probably couldn't conceive of how long but in a cave there is no rain or anything else to erode it.

  6. a cave painting specialist recently discovered that , cave paintings have  been painted by using saliva and certain type of paint ( which was probably obtained from nature ie plants) and therefore stayed for over thousands of years.
