  1. No, because caviar is a certain TYPE of fish eggs that is rare/hard to get. You can get cheap stuff which is common. It's like some kind of fish egg and it's "fish row/rowe" or something similar. Plus only some kinds of fish egg are edible I think as in nice to eat.

  2. It's known as a delicacy and I suppose you just have to acquire a taste for them... Not really sure why it's so expensive. Maybe certain types of caviar come from rarer species of fish therefore making it more expensive..?

  3. Because people are lead to believe it is a delicacy

  4. because it makes yuppies feel good about themselves...

  5. its rare food and can only be caught when the certain fish lays eggs, which is a certain time in the year

  6. I am as baffled as you. It sounds disgusting as well.

  7. All sturgeon are endangered or threatened due to over fishing, poaching, black market trading, and habitat loss.

Beluga caviar ranges in price from more than $5,000 per kilogram in the United States because it comes from a  Endangered Species. This caviar is so expensive because only around one hundred Beluga Sturgeon are caught each year.

Currently only two sturgeon species are banned from harvesting, Acipenser brevirostrum and Acipenser sturio. Other species are protected by CITES.

CITES stands for the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

Countries may export caviar if they can prove that doing so is not detrimental to the survival of the species. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service must inspect all caviar coming into the United States.

  8. CAUSE THEY ARE FISH EGGS YOU KNOW HOW LONG THAT WOULD TAKE TO GET!!!

  9. it's pretty cheap in france

    mmm

  10. Caviar is expensive due to its limited supply (70 metric tonnes per year) outstripped by constantly increasing demand, and elaborate time-consuming technique of production. True Caspian caviar is derived from the Beluga sturgeon (grand sturgeon), Osetrova sturgeon (acipenser stadti persicus) and Sevruga sturgeon (acipenser stelatus).

  11. Much of the caviar sold in the U.S. comes from Iran.  Our relationship with that part of the world at any given time has an impact on how much we pay.  In addition, other trade restrictions and an ever-dwindling supply of sturgeon also affects the price.
