Chess is a popular board game. But why does it have so much

things about it. Why are there thousands of books, tons of info, thousands of pages and names just for one move or a opening move, every single detail for millions of games, clubs entirely for chess, pages and pages and pages of things just for chess, schools just for chess, entire organizations just for chess, famous chess players entire bio and every possibility having a name of its own just for chess, peoples lives only on chess, almost everything has something just for chess. Chess is just a board game like checkers and connect four. I know there is more pieces and more options. Why is there such extensive research and movies and just so much just for this one board game. I cant even explain how much extraordinary things just for chess and just chess alone . I enjoy playing chess sometimes but why is it that much overrated.Yahoo has all these features just for chess and no other games, Yahoo created a whole new just for

  1. Chess is  a really popular, interesting game. It challenges the mind and helps develop thinking skills. Many people thoroughly enjoy it including me. It is a great game, but the real answer to your question is simple. Because people think they can make money from doing whatever they did.

  2. Because chess in itself offers a lot for us humans.

*Chess is a more complex strategy board game than most other board games. If you were to permute the possible moves, you would realize that it is more complex than it appears to be.*

    1. We have all the possible opening moves to study, all the middle game strategy and tactics, and all the end games position to study. as human beings, we will naturally take advantage of what is given to us. this is the reason we have countless books, pages, etc written and dedicated just for chess.

    2. what is appealing about chess (at least for me) is the strategy-making part. it is full of, as I mentioned above, strategies and tactics. One position can have a lot of possiblities which will decide the outcome of the game. this adds a whole lot more fun to just playing chess, the surprise factor.

    3. Lastly, chess is so appealing beacause we can relate it to daily life. Chess teaches us patience, thinking before acting, proper evaluation, intuition, and so much more.

These are the reasons, I think, that make chess so popular and well- researched through out these years. I would not go to a point as to say it is overrated because it is indeed a wonderful and beautiful game. Or as many say, "Chess is an art." and I would like to add "Chess is a way of life."

I hope this answers your question :)

  3. Chess is over rated?:)  Name the last person who insisted people spend on chess.  (They did.  It was called the Soviet Union.)

Everything you mentioned is the result of choices of players.  I don't know what you propose.  ("Hey, you can't buy that book, it is illegal.  Why?  Because I know better than you.":))

Supposedly chess helps memory, logical thinking, spacial relations, etc.

  4. Hello --

You ask a very good question!

I am a chess fanatic -- so let me point you in the right direction.

To say that chess is just a game it to misunderstand it.

Chess is an art form ... seeing a beautiful combination is like hearing great music.

Chess teaches a lot of virtues like problem solving and concentration.  Ben Franklin wrote about how important chess is.  Chess has been compared to religion in its teaching of ethics and morality.  (at one time or another it has been outlawed by various countries and churches ... the Taliban in Afghanistan outlawed chess).

Chess has over 1500 years of history ... During that time the finest minds have been fascinated by it.

Chess is a martial art!  Most people don't think that but consider ... after the medieval knight practiced his swordsmanship, and horsemanship all day ... in the evening he learned chess.  Because all the fighting skill in the world is useless without good strategy!

In its history chess has been respected by all races and classes and nationalities.   The World chess organization's motto is "Gens Un Sum" ... "The family of man".  While baseball banned black players ... chess (in general) has never known any kind of discrimination (Jew, Greek, Christian, Muslim, Black, White).

    Hope that helps a little!

  5. If you think the history of Chess is extensive.. you should look into the game of GO. 4,000 years old.. and played by more people world wide.

  6. Chess is actually a great game that teaches critical thinking skills.  By becoming adept at not only planning your moves, but predicting your opponents moves, you develop your ability to reason and strategize. In short, chess makes you smart!
