  1. Because they know science, meaning they know the rules. You can't really solve a major math problem if you don't have a mathematician present to point out the mistakes and impossibilities.  In other words their opinions are necessary in order to determine if a solution (for lack of a better word) is correct taking into account what is already deemed to be scientificly correct. If there were no scientists to validate information we could say that for example "Santa makes it snow" and there would be no one to prove it wrong so in schools it would be taught that Santa makes it snow. Does this help?

  2. One person cannot work on everything, and most problems in science are actually lots of little problems added together.

If different groups are working in the same problem, they can subdivide it into constituent smaller problems and each work on one bit.

Note that even non-collaborating scientists *always* share information when they publish their results. If you and i are working on a similar field, I might well be able to use the information you have discovered to help my research.

It's mostly a "two heads are better than one" thing.
