  2. Combustion is the reaction between a fuel and oxygen (or an oxidant) which is an exothermic reaction (creates heat).

    Respiration is a form of slow combustion that takes takes place at a low temperature, (i.e not like wood burning which).

  3. They both are similar in a way that both cause release of energy by break down of high energy bonds.

    however they differ on some crucial points

    Combustion occurs in an open atmosphere

    Respiration occurs inside the cells of a living organism

    Combustion causes the energy to be converted to heat and be released into the atmosphere (eg burning of wood)

    Respiration causes the released energy to be stored in high energy compounds known as Adenosine tri phosphate or ATP (also known as energy currency of the body) which may then be used in further metabolic reactions

  5. During combustion the foll. reaction takes place:-

    C6 H12 O6 + O2 ----CO2 +H2O

    When the glucose which is present in wood is burnt it reacts with oxygen and gives out carbon dioxide and water & energy is released in the form of heat and light.

    During respiration the foll. happens

    C6 H12 O6 + O2----CO2 + H20

    glucose and oxygen  react with each other to give out carbon dioxide & water and energy is released in the form of ATP which is used by us.

    Hence combustion and respiration are related

  6. Respiration works on the same principles as combustion, on a much smaller scale.  And when you breath, like with a campfire, you take in oxygen, and release CO2.
