Why is corn considered a vegetable until it is popped?! Is there a chemical change from the hot air or are they s******g us and saying that popcorn is bad when it really isn't? I can't think of any other foods that change food groups when cooked! I mean the kernel is popped with hot air (and maybe a little oil). Is popped corn truly a vegetable? If not, why?!

  1. Popcorn isn't bad at all- it's actually very rich in fiber and in vitamin E. It's the butter and the added salt that make it bad. Air-popped popcorn is a great healthy snack that's low in calories.

Most nutritionists consider corn a starch, not a vegetable. For diabetics and people who have problems with insulin production, it's definitely considered a starch

  2. why all the nonsense explaining,,,

The government has laws defining all the produce..

    it is a tax problem

the corn is a seed (fruit) but it's main use is a vegetable.

and popcorn it beyond that it is with the candy and snacks..

  3. corn is a veggie, last i checked. chemical change? what chemical change? i'm not aware that popping corns go thru chemical change? now i'm asking questions. anyway, i think its still a veggie after it's been popped. only that now, it has entered a new food group, junk food. lol... yeah, admit it, popcorn doesn't taste good without salted butter, rite? hey, i love popcorns, if thats any consolation.

  4. Popped corn can't possibly be a vegetable because raw corn is a grain.  We treat it like a vegetable, but that doesn't mean it is one.  Corn is a grain.

Popped corn is not all that bad for you.  The butter and salt (or chemical imitations thereof) with which we tend to eat it are the main problem.  As a grain, corn has more sugar than most 'real' veggies.  That doesn't go away once it's popped.

Corn's not a veggie, tomatoes aren't veggies, and peanuts aren't nuts.  Have fun!

  5. Corn is not a vegetable..it's a grain.
