They cross-breed purebred types to get hybrid vigor in the pigs are going to be grown out for meat or put into a commercial feed lot.  They gain weight faster and are more hearty than purebred pigs.  Most producers will maintain a purebred sow herd of one breed and purebred boars from a different breed if they are producing pigs for meat.  Sellers of breeding stock will stick with one breed.


  2. crossbreds are used primarily for meat production while purebreds are used for breeding by crossbreeding not just pigs but any animal you get a good animal with a lot of hybrid vigor
