Because 'dec' normally means something involving ten so you would think December was the 10th month so why is it the 12th?

  1. Because

January, Februray, March,April, May, June, July, August, September,October and November are in front of it.

  2. Originally, the calendar had 10 months, which makes Dec (which is the prefix for 10) a sensible name for the tenth month.  THEN CAME JULIUS AND AUGUSTUS CAESAR....naturally, if you were that big of a world leader--you would want a month named after you too!  Not only that, you would want them to be summer months to coincide with fertility/farming months (not bleak winter months) AND you would want them to be one of the longest months too.  So they took days from all the other months and stuck their months in the middle of the year and thus, we have month names that make no sense for the last half of the year.  Sept = 7, Oct = 8, Nov=9 and Dec = 10.

    LOL--gotta love ancient dictators :o)

  3. BEACUASE THATS HOW GOD MADE IT

  4. It used to be the 10th month, but the Romans added July and August (named after Julius and Augustus Caesar) so December became the 12th.

The same for September (Sept is usually to do with 7) and October (Oct is usually to do with 8) etc.

  5. because its after the 11th month

  6. because if you count the months it's number 12...

    weird question.......

  7. The Romans didn't add July and August in honor of their first emperors, they just renamed them (they used to be "Quintilus" and "Sextilus", the "fifth" and "sixth" months). The Roman march was month-one.

January was a month dedicated to the two-faced god Janus, the god of beginnings and ends, and February was sort of set aside out of respect for ancient pagan funerary and mourning rites that traditionally took place in that month.

So, you've got two special months, and then ten regular months after those, for 12 total.

  8. whent he gregorian calendar came into effect, we added two months, but kept the names for the last four months, even though they no longer represented that number stage
