Well, it's important because it means various substances are able to passively move through an organism, without the organism having to expend energy transporting these materials throughout the body. For example, if you drink a glass of water it diffuses into your blood stream pretty quickly. Diffusion means that the materials that supply cellular processes are continually replaced.
