Why is eBay not taking off in India?

In many coutries, eBay has become a huge success and a vibrant competitive marketplace for about anything you can buy, new or second hand. All over Europe and the North America, eBay is the first place you go if you look for anything. It is huge and it works very well. Why is it that eBay has not become anywhere close to popular in India?

  1. maybe its the culture. im not sure about india but in some asian countries the idea of second hand doesnt even exist.

    if sometings old you just chuck it


  2. india is still a devleoping country and only a handfull actually have internet access at home and still in major cities people have to pay to use the internet at a cafe

  3. internet penetration in india is still low at 3.6%. this includes non broad band users.  broad band penetration in india is negligible.  ebay offers one the opportunity to buy online while sitting intthe house / office.  in india because of unreliable internet connection and also low penetration of credit cards the potential customers are fewer.  further, the convenience factor of online purchase is not an issue in india as people have servants to go and procure things, besides home delivery is prevalent.  lastly, people still have a culture of touch and feel before buying in india.  these factors have all contributed to online B2C portals not taking off
