Why is effective communication important in organisation?

Remember the parable of the five blind men and the elephant? Each, by feeling the part of the elephant within his reach, had a different idea of what the creature was.
If all departments in an organization - business, charity or government - are not reading from the same page, there is going to be a great deal of wasted time, effort and money. None of that is going to help achieve the goals set by the head of the organization, and communication is the only way to ensure that everyone is working toward the same goal.
