He was injured...I'm not sure if he's available this week but once he's fully fit he should be a permanent starter. Scolari described him as "One of the very best midfielders in the world" so I'm sure Essien is very much in his plans.

Edit: To the guys who are saying Chelsea play 4-3-3, I doubt that's the case this season. Against Portsmouth Scolari played 4-2-3-1 and I think he'll use that formation throughout the season. The most likely line-up is...

chelsea usually play a 4-3-3..

essien used to be the holding midfielder then...but i think scolari has more trust in deco..

essien also used to play as right back..but bosingwa has that spot covered..

so its hard to make a spot for him..

i think he'll come on as a sub this week.

Essien is a star midfielder. But look at who chelsea have to play in a center midfield role. Ballack, Lampard, Deco, Mikel, Essien... So chelsea play a 4-3-3 formation, that leaves 3 center mid players and a huge choice. And they want expierience, so they will play Ballack, Lamps and Deco because of there passing ability, essien gets forward too much and mikel is still young. He will probably not play.
