Accounting's role is to either provide information to guide operations, in an internal setting, or to provide sufficient information to allow outside financiers to make valid judgements about the creditworthiness of a company.  In either case, a lot is riding on the decisions made with the accounting data.  As such, the accuracy of the information is paramount.  If a practitioner's ethics are compromised, then the resulting information will be, as well.
