Why is everyone assuming that the Yanks or the Bosox have a lock on the AL Wild Card?

Minnesota is playing good baseball, while the Yanks are slipping and the Pink Sox are tenuous.

As a Yankee fan, I am not assuming the Yankees have a lock on wild card spot.  It's still up for grabs & should be interesting the rest of the season while many teamswill be battling it out for the wild card spot since the only division to me that is wrapped up, is the AL West.

dude...no one is picking the yanks to win the wild card...everyone is just sayign that theyll be sticking around and to not count them out just yet...i think the sox are gonna won the al east while the rays take the al wild card

Well, I am not assuming that either team have it locked up.

Since there is at least one person that doesn't assume it, the concept that everyone assumes it is false.

Yah I think whoever looses the AL central will win wild card, also don't forget the rangers, all they need is a pitcher of waiviers and they are in the race.

More the Red Sox because the Yankees are struggling but they are a lock because the are the current champs and have the best team on paper

Reputation reputation reputation, oh and did I mention reputation? If you want to know why people assume that the Yanks or Red Sox have a lock on the wildcard it's because recently since 2003 it's generally been one or the other who grabs it.

That doesn't mean that either team will get it necessarily, but that's how some fans think. It's not unlike picking the Indianapolis Colts to win the AFC south based on recent history. As long as Minnesota plays well as does Chicago, they control their own destinies. It's all about though where to do they stand against the Yankees and Red Sox after game 162, since those 4 teams will likely be fighting for the wildcard, assuming that TB holds on and wins the division.

As a Red Sox fan, I have been watching what the Twins do every day and I was very happy when the Royals rallied in extra innings yesterday.  The Twins are a tough team and both the Red Sox and the White Sox have to be watching out for them.

The Twins will probably end up with the Central title, thanks in part to the White Sox' inevitable collapse which will take them out of even wild card contention.

Because their on the east coast and they have a huge population of fans vs Minnesota or Chicago for that matter depending on who comes out of the Central on top.
