Why is everyone saying Avril Lavigne is goth?

I don't really give to phucks about it. Seriously she doesn't have amazing style and no she's not gorgeous. AT her age I'd hope that she would dress the way she wants. She looks like she's be rummaging through a garbage can. It seems like you're the ignorant one. Labels help people identify things there are far worse labels than goth I assure you.

Avril Lavigne is definitely not Goth,she's not even rock!!

She's just a poser who acted like being rock just to get ppl's attention and sell more records,now she's more pop than she was!!

And yes,I'm bothered by this....cause it's an insult to the Goth subculture saying that someone like her is Goth!!

i agree she is gorgeous! she is soooooooooo totally not goth...the people saying that need to figure out the difference between rock and goth....haha i love her style too..... but there are crazy people out there .... and i am one of them ;)

Actually she is only called goth by people who have no clue what goth actually is.  (mainly because it is often assumed that goth has to do with what you wear and how you do your makeup... technically the look that most people think is "goth" is actually the "new romantic" style from the late 70's/early 80's... which is some of what she wears)

Goth is a music subculture... started in the late 70's out of post punk.  A goth is an avid fan or musician of goth rock... one who participates at least a little in the music subculture.

Avril Lavigne's music is actually a form of pop-punk, so she is not a goth by her music... now unless it happens that her favorite music happens to be goth rock, then she is not a goth.

Actual goth rock bands would be stuff like: 45 grave, Christian Death (the older band by the name not the newer one), Bauhaus, the Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Cult, The Mission UK, etc..

And more recently: Voltaire, Bella Morte, the Birthday Party, Anders Manga, London after Midnight, Cruxshadows, etc..

Oh and labels are actually kind of important... stereotypes are annoying, but labels are actually pretty darn usefull... after all these are all types of labels:  male, female, human, your heritage, punk/goth/rivethead/metalhead/etc... (member of music subcultures)

A label is just a description of a part of a person or object in how it relates to others of a specific type... it does not define everything of who or what they are.
