Why is everything smaller?

I've noticed for the last few years everything is getting smaller. Cadbury Creme Eggs, Monster Munch, and loads of other candies and snacks are shrinking.

  1. You should have asked this in Marketing....LOL.

    For three years, food manufactures, wholesalers and retailers have been struggling with increased costs on the one hand and fear of losing market share with consumers on the other.

    They tried keeping the same sizes and slowly increasing prices and found that there was a point where consumers would 'switch' from their brand to discount or store brands. So they began gradually lessening the amount of product in the container (while keeping the same physical size of box or can or bag) and keeping the price the same. People now are noticing that too (coffee manufacturers have downsized the # of ounces in a large container 3-4 times in the last two years for example).

    Now they are stuck...some raising prices a little here, lessening the amount of product there all the while hoping consumers never become aware that the store brands or generic brands are the same product as the premium brand...just a different label on the can...generic companies contract their production from the big name companies, they DO NOT have their own.

    Source(s):

    Worked in factories doing this....packaging OreIda hashbrowns for a product run, and when an order for Save or Best Buy came in, all we did was put different plastic bags in the packaging machine's magazine...the product was the same, only the package (and price) changed.
